Opus DSP

Any sound,
played as grains.

Drop in a file and MOTION cuts it into grains you can play, sequence and bend in time. Whatever comes out is still your sound.

One payment. Three machines. Updates included for good.

Simulation, not the plug-in. It runs in your browser, so it can glitch or stutter. The real one is native, and clean.

Yours to play with, here. Hold shift and click anything on it to read what it does.

The questions people ask · what has changed

How to use it

The same sound and the same knobs. What changes is what decides when you hear it.

  • pattern

The pattern decides. A clock walks the measures, and a note runs the row for as long as it lasts.

  • notes

Your notes decide. One measure per key, chromatically from C — press one and you hear that measure at once.

  • spot

Nothing decides. The position knob is the place, held and ringing, with no measures at all.

Grains you can steer

How often, how long, from where, how high. Six knobs, and every one of them is something you can hear.

Sixteen steps, sixteen places in the sound

Each step holds where it reads, which way round, and how long it lasts. Or drop the pattern and play the steps from your keyboard.

Draw what happens to time

Two curves you draw by hand: one for level, one for where in the bar it reads from. Scratches, stutters, half speed drops, gated pumps.

The questions people ask.

If yours is not here, write to hello@opusdsp.com and it probably should be.

Is this a subscription?

No. You pay once and it is yours, including every update that comes after. There is no renewal, no yearly fee, and no version of this page where that changes for a copy already sold.

How many computers can I use it on?

Three at a time. A studio machine, a laptop, and one more, which is usually the one you regret installing on. You can free any of them from your account and use the slot somewhere else, as often as you like, without asking anybody.

All those visuals - is it heavy on the CPU?

No. The drawing and the sound are kept apart: the audio never waits for a picture, and the pictures are drawn from what the audio has already finished with. It is measured on every build, and we are still making it lighter.

There is a CPU meter in the top right corner of the window, reading how much of each audio block's deadline the sound took.

Does it need the internet?

No. It asks for a connection once, to turn your key into a licence. After that it works with the network unplugged.

What happens when I get a new computer?

Free the old machine on your account page and activate the new one. If the old one is dead, stolen or sold with the disk still in it, free it anyway, and the slot comes back regardless of whether that machine ever answers again.

What if it does not work on my machine?

Write to hello@opusdsp.com with what you are running and what happened. If it cannot be made to work within fourteen days of your buying it, you get your money back. The whole amount, not a credit.

Which hosts does it work in?

It is a VST3 and an Audio Unit, so anything modern: FL Studio, Ableton Live, Logic, Bitwig, Reaper, Studio One, Cubase. There is also a standalone application if you would rather not open a host at all.
